About

My name is Allen Gilhooly and I manage a team of like-minded people who provide a low-cost counselling service for Co. Sligo and the surrounding counties.
My way of working as a therapist is dynamic and often described as non-clinical, friendly and collaborative. I see the people coming to me as the real experts and my job is to facilitate that by asking the right questions rather than giving answers/diagnosis. Working in my own private clinic for over 20 years, I have been busy making sure no-one is left on a waiting list whilst trying to keep costs down (www.needhelp.ie) Private Counselling or Psychotherapy for most people generally means an investment which can factor into decision making about seeking help or not. This hasn't ever sat easy with me over the years. I founded and directed a free counselling service in Ballyfermot, Dublin in 2009 where we reduced the waiting list for appointments for children and teens from 8 weeks to 48 hours by integrating it within a Family centre called 'FamiliBase'. The service is still there and has impacted positively on the lives of many young people, their families and the community. After, I moved up to Sligo in 2010 I wanted to do something similar. Now that I have nurtured my own family, I have the space to follow through on that goal. Sligo Community Counselling Ltd. is the culmination of my life experience as a Youth & Community worker, Teacher, Chaplain and therapist. It aims to assist people in searching for help/support by providing a low cost service which has a team of therapists with a variety of life experience and qualification. |
..it's the people who sit across from me who are the real experts... " |
What's Happening.
The service is available to adults and young people (aged 18-25). We have a team of 13 therapists, a senior therapist and a clinical supervisor . We are based in Tireragh Community Support in Kilglass near Enniscrone and the Northside Community Centre in Sligo town.
Next Step
We are passionate about this project and motivated towards the next steps...
Step 1 - to expand the service to provide individual/group therapy to young people and their families aged 6-25.
Step 2 - to expand the service to South Donegal and North Leitrim.
Step 3 - to link in the service with 'Social Prescribing' Initiatives that provide useful and realistic pathways to mental wellbeing so that people have other resources available after they finish.
W.I.C.D. Programme
We have a group therapy programme to work with young people around social anxiety, school refusal and behavioural problems. We piloted this in the Northside Community Centre in Sligo and St. Nathy's College Ballaghadreen Roscommon in 2023 to 2024. Due to its success the programme has been adopted by the school again for 2024-2025. Please call for more information.
Goal of Sligo Community Counselling
We provide quick access to therapy in Enniscrone and Sligo town with an option also for low cost therapy for adults but it doesn't stop there.
Our goal is to expand the service into the neighbouring counties and provide child and Adolescent therapy in a variety of modalities, whether it's in 1 to 1 settings/group or class or through activity based interventions like art/hiking.
